Modified Plastics

Modified plastics also called engineering plastics are base polymers altered with additives, fillers, or blending techniques to enhance mechanical, thermal, electrical, or aesthetic performance.

Main Types by Modification Method

  • Reinforced Plastics: Incorporate fibrous fillers like glass, carbon, or aramid fibers to significantly boost tensile strength, rigidity, and heat resistance. 
  • Filled Plastics: Blend mineral or organic fillers—such as talc, mica, calcium carbonate, or ceramic beads—to improve dimensional stability, machinability, or lower production costs.
  • Toughened / Impact-Resistant Plastics: Integrate rubber or thermoplastic elastomers to increase fracture resistance and low-temperature durability.
  • Flame-Retardant Resins: Add chemical compounds that suppress combustion to meet safety standards for electronics and automotive housings. 
  • Conductive and Antistatic Plastics: Reduce electrical resistivity by embedding carbon black, carbon nanotubes, or metal fibers. 
  • Plastic Alloys / Blends: Mix two or more distinct polymers to create a hybrid material combining the best properties of each component.

Common Industrial Categories of Modified Plastics

  • Modified PP (Polypropylene): Enhanced with talc or glass fibers for automotive parts and appliance shells. Such as PP gf30, PP + 30% Long Glass Fiber, PP with carbon fiber, etc.
  • Modified ABS: Optimized for high impact strength, gloss, and exterior trim in consumer goods. Such as PC/ABS alloy
  • Modified PA6, PA66: High-heat engineering thermoplastic blend used in electrical and structural components. Such as PA6 gf30%, PA66 gf30%, PA6 with long glass fiber, PA66 with carbon fiber, etc.
